My morning skincare routine

As a bridal makeup artist, people often ask me, ‘How do you get makeup to last the length of the day? Mine has usually disappeared by lunch!’ And i always give the same answer - a good skincare routine is the crux of beautiful makeup - your makeup will only; last, look and sit as well as the skin that is under it. That doesn’t mean picture perfect skin, but healthy, hydrated skin.

I closely follow that with, ‘but a good routine doesn’t need to be expensive’…and either it does, it just has to be a routine that you do daily that meets the needs of your skin.

My skin is fairly normal these days. It can be sensitive, red and dehydrated at different times of the year and because of that i like to err on the side of caution and to stick to products that are pretty gentle. Interested to know what i use? well read on…

Garnier Micellar Water

I start by using a cotton pad to take any excess dirt or makeup residue off my face. This product is just the best! It’s inexpensive, it’s sensitive and removes every last morsel.

Your Good Skin Nourishing Hot Cloth Cleanser

Now i have used this product for the last year or so and i think it has to be one of the loveliest everyday cleansers on the high street. Yes, i love my more expensive cleansers like Emma Hardy Moringa Balm, but for day-to-day cleansing this cleanser cannot be beaten. It gentle, creamy and really hydrates the skin. I use a hot face cloth to remove it, it does come with 2 muslin cloths but i’m a face cloth snob and prefer to use one of the many i’ve stolen from hotels over the years.

Your Good Skin Pore Minimising Tonic

I’ve never really been much of a toner fan, i never really noticed the effect it had on my skin, but i have to say that it’s just become part of my routine to sweep the Your Good Skin toner over my face after cleansing to soothe my skin and minimise pores.

Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence

Ok, so this next product ain’t so cheap and to be honest sounds a bit ‘fluffy’ - i mean an essence? Come on…but it is meant to improve the look of fine lines, improve radiance and the overall texture of the skin. You just take a few drops in the palms of your hands and press all over your face. Definitely the stage you can drop if an ‘essence’ is a step too far for you but i can honestly say that a 200ml bottle has lasted me an age because i use so little daily - if that helps you justify the spend to yourself by all means use it!

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid

We’re on to the potions now and the one that i notice the biggest change in my skin when i miss a day or two is The Ordinary’s hyaluronic acid. I mean it was pretty much 2017/2018’s biggest cult product and here’s why, it’s effective and it’s cheap! Simples. Instant hydration for my skin and honestly i think the reason i’ve seen such a change in the overall look of my skin in the last few years. I wouldn’t ever be without it.

Azelaic Acid

I’d say The Ordinary’s Azelaic Acid has also played a huge part in the appearance of my skin within the last few years. It’s essentially a brightening product and works wonders on red / roseaca-prone skin. I just use it across my nose and cheeks and it really downplays my natural ‘flush’.

Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate

A blend of Ginger, Sunflower and Tamanu oils, this oil is used to correct the visible signs of skin fatigue (loosely translated as my three year old). I pop a few drops on the palm of my hands and press into my skin. Unlike some oils i’ve tried this one absorbs fast and doesn’t affect the look or slip of makeup. Big thumbs up. I sometimes like to mix it with my moisturiser for a hydration sensation overload!

Alex Steinherr Plump and Glow

I’m not really loyal to one moisturiser, i am known to go with what’s on offer in Boots, but this one was actually a Christmas gift and i am enjoying it. It’s great to see a Beauty Editor working with Primark to create affordable Skincare. The downside? That it’s only available in Flagship Primark stores and you can’t buy online, le sigh. Oh well, it will be on to the next when it’s finished.

So there you have it, an insight into my daily skincare routine and some of the products i recommend to my brides on their trials. What’s some of your skincare must haves? Feel free to slide into my DM’s and let me know.
